Storytelling can be an important instrument for facilitating language learning, especially in early childhood. It allows learners to
engage with the target vocabulary in a familiar approach. Moreover, it is especially helpful in increasing student attention. On the other hand, there are many benefits of drawing: drawing something helps a person
remember it because the information is processed in multiple ways – visually, semantically and kinesthetically.
“Handa’s Surprise” by Eileen Browne allowed the first graders to be introduced to the food and fruit vocabulary (and even some animals!) in a meaningful and relaxed way. Through colourful illustrations and an enjoyable plot twist, students learned some fruits in English. After the story, it was time for a class discussion where we proceed to the story comprehension. Next, the teacher challenged us to draw the story and to include as many details as possible. We drew the animals and fruits, Handa and her friend, the village and the sky, as well as our favourite parts.
