We can now tell you how you get to different places in the city!
After working on city locations, such as butcher’s, cinema, town hall, library, among others and after we became confident in using this new vocabulary, it was time to learn directions. We learned five new words:
Since we acquired these new words our English teachers thought that it would be a good idea to put together our own city maps so that we could later do an oral activity. This activity involved telling each other how to get from one location to another.
Firstly, we were given images of the locations that we already knew, an A3 poster paper, and glue. We worked in groups of four or three and divided tasks so that everyone could participate. Secondly, we had to think of where we would glue each location. After having concluded this part of the activity, we had to draw roads and name them, as well. We could chose to name the streets after ourselves, or to think of English words that we knew to make up original, different names. We also had the chance to use the vocabulary we already knew. Finally, we were asked to decorate the map, as we wished.
We all were very enthusiastic about this activity. We were extremely organized and well behaved in class and we drew the roads. Independently of our personal choices, the outcome of the maps was amazing, and we were very proud of our city maps!
Finally, it was time to have more fun and make the most of our master pieces. In the same small groups, we took turns asking a simple question: “How do I get from the (cinema) to the (greengrocer’s)?” Once again, we all answered this question using the new vocabulary that we had learned and the teacher got to understand if we had fully understood the words that we had just acquired.
We all had a lot of fun and we are eager to do more activities as this one!
